On February 23, 2019 the Dream Beyond Bars Fellows came together for what marked the 2019 Dream Beyond Bars Summit: A Youth Vision for Alameda County’s Justice System.

The event was the culmination of over a year’s worth of work by the the Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURYJ) and Urban Peace Movement fellows. This process included multiple focus groups and discussions, over 200 surveys, and community town halls. All of the data collected has pointed to the fact that there is unanimous support for community-based solutions over incarceration.

After finalizing the report and holding The Dream Beyond Bars Summit, we were able to bring on two additional fellows into the program to help strategize and implement our policy recommendations for closing down youth facilities in Alameda County.

With that said, as we move into campaign mode we will be working closely with UPM, in addition to our movement family, regarding intentional meetings with elected officials on our findings and recommendations.

However, none of this work would have been made possible if it was not for the dedication and continued support ofDr. Prince White and his involvement with the research. Sadly, we lost a true visionary in 2018 and his life will live on through his campaign.
